Why Pokémon cards became a real market.

The Pokémon Trading Card Game launched in Japan in October 1996 and the U.S. Base Set arrived in January 1999. The big modern price surge hit around 2020, when nostalgia, social media, celebrity openings, grading demand and sealed-product scarcity pushed trading cards into a much bigger mainstream collector market.

1996

Pokémon cards launch in Japan, creating one of the most recognizable collectible card games in the world.

1999

The U.S. Base Set arrives and becomes the foundation for American Pokémon card nostalgia.

2020-2021

Trading cards see a major boom. eBay reported 142% domestic trading card growth in 2020, with Pokémon leading as its most popular category.

Today

The market is more mature. Condition, grading, rarity, print run, popularity and sealed-product demand matter more than hype alone.

Future

Strong cards, iconic characters, clean vintage, rare promos, low-pop graded cards and sealed products may continue attracting collectors, but values can move up or down. Smart selling starts with accurate comps.

Consignment for cards that deserve a premium strategy.

Some cards should not be rushed into a quick cash offer. For rare, graded, sealed or higher-end pieces, our consignment option can help position your item properly, photograph it cleanly, market it to the right buyers and aim for a stronger final result.

Best for:

High-end slabs, sealed boxes, rare Pokémon, major sports rookies, autographs, numbered cards and collections with strong upside.
